Many of our client families are arranging a funeral for the first time which can be a daunting prospect. Their initial concern is what to do first and this of course will depend on the circumstances. The most common scenarios are outlined below:

When Someone Dies At Home

Expected - If the persons passing was expected, the initial call should be made to the GP that attended during the deceased’s illness. The GP will then call to the home to confirm the death has occurred. If a locum doctor confirms the death has occurred, your GP should be informed as soon as possible.

Unexpected - If the persons passing is unexpected, the first call should be to the deceased’s GP. The GP may advice the family to contact their nearest Garda Station as the Gardai may wish to refer the death to the Coroner.

For any death at home, the family may also wish to contact a Minister of their faith.

When Someone Dies In Hospital, Hospice Or Nursing Home

A doctor will confirm that the death has occurred and the doctor or hospital staff will advise if a post mortem examination will be required.

When Someone Dies
Suddenly

All sudden deaths should be reported to An Garda Siochána who will refer the death to The Coroner who will assess the facts and issue instructions accordingly.
